I wanted a belt for Ren Faire garb, not as a pirate but a man at arms. I’m quite large with a 67” waist and a standard 1 1/4” wide belt looks out of proportion on me. In addition I wanted enough length to form a standard medieval loop and have the tip of the belt hang down to about my knee. I emailed Ravenswood and told them what I was looking for and they said they would have to splice two pieces of leather together but that they could do it. I also specified that I wanted the splice sewn instead of riveted and the buckle attached the same way.
I received the belt and while overall the quality was excellent a couple of the details got lost in translation. Ravenswood, and MJ in particular, worked very closely and helpfully with me to revise the details and I sent the belt back. I should also add that UPS had some difficulty with that delivery but again, MJ was extremely helpful and diligent and it got delivered without further trouble. I want to make clear that the details I’m referring to that needed adjustment were what one might expect from such a custom order being handled by email, and Ravenswood worked very closely with me to make sure I would get what I was looking for and they deserve only praise.
I received the belt yesterday and could not be happier. It meets every specification I wanted and in fact is even better than expected. The seam connecting the two pieces is cut so the ends are in a decorative curve, something I did not actually specify, and is so nice and well done it does not look like it was meant to splice the leather but like an intentional and fancy design detail. The sewing at the buckle was also done in a fancy stitch pattern.
The belt is everything I wanted and more and I really want to thank MJ and the craftsmen at Ravenswood for working with me and creating an excellent piece of leatherwork. I’m going to the PA Ren Faire this coming weekend and will be wearing it proudly. Oh, they also sent me a free small leather coin purse each time! Thank you all at Ravenswood for your patience working with me and your great work.
